Melbourne man dies after monkey bike crash on camping trip at Stradbroke

Tributes are flowing for a 24-year-old Cranbourne man – Luke Staveley, who died in a monkey bike crash while on a camping trip in Gippsland.

Luke Staveley was killed after two bikes crashed near Stradbroke early Saturday morning.

He was with a group of mates at a remote campsite when, at about 12.30am, two went for a ride on their monkey bikes.

When Mr Staveley followed, he collided with a mate on an unnamed road near Baldwins Lane.

Investigators say the bikes had no lights and the riders weren’t wearing helmets.

Mr Staveley died at the scene while the other rider, aged 22, was flown to The Alfred hospital in Melbourne with non life-threatening injuries.

He is in a stable condition.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help Mr Staveley’s mother with funeral costs. It has raised more than $3000 in six hours.

Mr Staveley was remembered as a “happy-go-lucky man who would always be there for his friends and family”.
