Name: LIFE OUTSIDE WORK (Justin, Selina, Caitlin & Tyler)
City and State you live: NSW
Favourite Quote: “We haven’t been everywhere but it’s on our list!”

We are a family of four who are making the most of our “life outside work (and school)” by travelling and exploring Australia in our caravan.

We hook up the van and get away as much as possible – we head to the beach, the bush and everywhere in between!
We don’t want to just do the highway lap around oz.  We want more, we want to see it all – the small towns away from the coast, the outback, the roads less travelled!

Although one day we are keen to set off on a lap of oz and see the parts of the coast we are yet to explore, for now, we are enjoying this style of travel and seeing the diversity of this country! And the best part, we are making some unforgettable memories with our kids!

If you could only re-live five minutes of the trip, which five minutes would it be?

The part when we are leaving home, everyone is excited and looking forward to the adventures ahead!

What has been your most favourite destination and why?

This is such a tricky question and one that we always struggle to answer. We have travelled to so many amazing locations so far and to be honest each trip is just as good as the last, just in a different way. But to name a couple of our favourites…
⦁ Outback Australia – we love heading west and exploring the roads less travelled.
⦁ The Great Ocean Road was amazing with the breathtaking coast line. We took a helicopter flight over the 12 Apostles and that was stunning! It really was amazing to see it from that perspective.

Our next trip is to Tasmania for 6 weeks over Christmas so maybe that will be the destination that beats all?!?

What has been the scariest moment of your travels?

We haven’t really had any scary moments while travelling – maybe the scariest thing is the thought of having to come home

What have you found (sights or activities) a bit off the beaten track? Beyond the tourist traps that made you go wow?

Free Camping at Merty Merty in South Australia! We were heading from Cameron Corner to Innamincka when due to the rough and slow-going road conditions we decided call it a day and camp on the Strzelecki Track. This is one of our favourite campsites we have stumbled across. We had a campsite in the middle of nowhere, peace and quiet, a camp fire, the most beautiful sunset, and a sky full of stars all to ourselves! Perfection!!

What has been the funniest/strangest/most insightful bit of advice you’ve been given on your travels?

I’ll go with insightful: we have had many people tell us to keep doing what we are doing with our kids, that we are giving them such a fantastic opportunity to see and do so many amazing things with our travelling.

Where would you revisit?

Years ago before we had our kids we lived in a small mining town by the name of Tom Price in north west WA. While there we explored parts of the beautiful Karijini National Park. We would love to take the kids back and show them the beauty of the Pilbara and discover it all over again.

Where do you dream of visiting (anywhere in the world)?

Our dreams are taken up with travelling Australia! There is just so much to see in our beautiful country and so many places on our list! Although I guess we would be more than happy to take a trip or two to New Zealand… just can’t take the van on that one!

What has surprised you about yourself?

How much the travel bug has bitten us! We have always liked travelling and exploring but the more we do it, the more we want to do it!! The kids love visiting new places. They learn so much while travelling and have had some of the most amazing first-hand experiences!

What’s been your weirdest moment while travelling?

The funny things you see on the side of the road (usually in the middle of nowhere) and the quirky towns we have visited.
Some things that have stuck in our mind:
⦁ a tool tree in the middle of nowhere (hills hoist covered in tools)
⦁ a country fence lined with shoes of all sorts!
⦁ the underground houses at White Cliffs are strangely amazing!
⦁ the pubs in the scrub at Lightning Ridge!
⦁ we met Klaus Menzel, the outback camel traveller, back in 2011. Klaus was walking around Australia with his two camels!!

What has been the most useful item you’ve brought?

The Weber Baby Q! We cook everything on it – pizzas, stir-fry’s, roasts, toasted sandwiches… wouldn’t leave home without it!
