Not only is this camping dessert insanely easy, but it’s super cheap too which makes it a great choice when we have a large group. You need strawberries, marshmallow fluff, a skewer and a campfire. That’s it! There’s really no instructions needed, but I wanted to note that I originally came across this recipe here.
If you’re looking for simple and easy yet awesome – look no further. This recipe is a definite favorite among the kids. Apples, butter, brown sugar, nuts and you’re ready to go! The original recipe calls for Splenda, but I’m not a fan of sugar alternatives, so I replace it with more brown sugar. We also sub chocolate chips in place of the nuts. Now this ladies and gents is awesome. If you’re sick of trying to make smores less messy, then it’s Angie (from EOL) to the rescue! Simple to make, not messy to eat. This is a great twist on the standard smores recipe. Five ingredients plus graham crackers and you’re ready to go in less than 30 minutes. Ah, the old tried and true banana boats. All you need are bananas, mini marshmallows, chocolate chips, tin foil and a campfire (we add peanut butter chips as well!). As the original recipe warns you, the results aren’t pretty – but they are yummy! One of the reasons I love this recipe, aside from the taste, is because once I slice the bananas, the younger kids can do the rest – keeping them busy while I get post dinner cleanup done. So, this recipe was pitched as one to do during an at home BBQ, but it works just as well at the campgrounds. Because some of the dry ingredients are stuff I wouldn’t bring with me camping except for this dessert, I make the dry portion of the recipe and toss it in a mason jar before I leave home. Ok, so this is one of those “doesn’t look great when completed but it sure is good!” kind of recipes. The original recipe calls for peanut butter chips, chocolate chips, apples, Chex cereal and powdered sugar. We replace the Chex cereal for graham crackers (we tried it the first time with Chex but then tried graham crackers on a whim the second time and preferred the latter version). This is an adults only recipe for after all the kids are in bed. 😉 All you need are marshmallows, a bottle of Bailey’s and a skewer (though, as the original recipe says, they are kind of messy, so have napkins or wet wipes on hand). Roast the marshmallows and dip them in Bailey’s – mmmmm. There’s no real recipe to this, but a thank you to Dabbles and Babbles where I originally found the recipe.
File this one under “gourmet recipe”. It takes quite a few ingredients you wouldn’t pack otherwise, but the results are totally worth it! Grab your dutch oven (or cast iron skillet), some ladyfingers, Kahlua, espresso powder, white chocolate pudding, some powdered milk and a chocolate bar – 20 minutes later you’ll have one amazing chocolatey (don’t let the color fool you!) dessert. So, we actually use a dutch oven to make this one because it’s simply the easier option while camping. The original recipe calls for using an oven. But, you can make the recipe just as easily with a dutch oven over the fire. Grab some sugar, eggs, flour, cocoa powder, salt, butter, heavy cream and chocolate chips and you’re good to go (aside from the cream and cocoa powder, I usually bring all these ingredients anyway). It doesn’t get much easier than this. Canned cinnamon rolls and a stick are all you need to create this one. Once again, in addition to it being easy and simple, I like this once because the kids can do the prep while I’m doing post dinner clean up. Ok, so I totally admit this one is a bit of a “cheat” so to speak in that you prep it at home and there’s no cooking needed. This one is awesome for that one day I’ve just done a ton and would like to take the easy way out on the food that evening. 😉 Prepare the pudding at home (recipe and instructions can be found here) and then follow the layering instructions to put it into mason jars. Bring with you in a cooler and you’re good to go for an easy dessert night.
Oh. My. Gosh. There are tons of variations of dump cake out there, but this one is my favorite of them all. Combine butter, yellow cake mix, pineapples, blueberries, pecans, some soda and sugar – dump it all in the dutch oven (thus the name) and bake. So, so good!
